Concert title: JUICE NEWTON & FRIENDS Grammy Award-winning recording artist Juice Newton known for such hits as “The Queen of Hearts” and “Angel of the Morning” will headline a benefit concert for the neurological disorder called Dystonia that affects children and adults of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, and for which there is yet no cure. The disorder causes involuntary and uncontrollable contractions and spasms in various muscle groups of the body including the neck/shoulder, limbs, face, vocal cords, and eyelids. It is the 3rd most common movement disorder following Tremor and Parkinson’s Disease, yet most have never heard of it. It is estimated that at least 300,000 persons in North America alone have some form of dystonia, but the actual number is probably much higher as many are misdiagnosed or remain undiagnosed. All proceeds from this event will fund crucial dystonia research to develop innovative treatments and to lead us closer to a CURE! Juice does not have dystonia herself but became involved with this cause after learning that the President of her Fan Club had a form of dystonia affecting his vocal cords. This is the 3rd time she has performed in a benefit concert for dystonia. Billy McLaughlin who is an amazing dystonia-affected solo, acoustic guitarist will also be performing. Billy retrained himself to play guitar with his opposite hand over a 12 year period, after developing dystonia in his other hand. He has a very unique and intricate style of playing called finger-tapping. He is the subject of the award-winning documentary “Changing Keys: Billy McLaughlin and the Mysteries of Dystonia” that was shown on many PBS stations across the country. And D.C. Hathaway is a talented, award-winning, 6-string bass guitarist and songwriter who has a form of dystonia that affects his vocal cords. He has become a very accomplished instrumentalist and he will also be performing in the program. Tickets are $35 and $45 and can be purchased online at www.sycuan.com/entertainment or in-person at the Sycuan Box Office.
